It was a typical Friday morning at work, but then something hit me. That "something" was a sushi craving, a craving I thought Yuki Hana Sushi and Korean B.B.Q. could satisfy. In the five minute drive from my office to Yuki Hana, my brain filled with thoughts of sushi rolls and edamame.
With an upcoming Pediatric Clinical Nutrition test, I thought it would be fun to sit at the sushi bar and study. I pushed the door open, looked around, and immediately felt like I had walked into the wrong place. Perhaps it was the lack of customers, the absence of decorations, or maybe it was the construction worker to my left that triggered the realization that the restaurant was no longer open.
The worker gave me a puzzled look and simply said, "Um, Miss this restaurant closed about a month ago." Feeling tremendously embarrassed for walking into a work zone, I apologized and awkwardly started to retreat to my car.
A quiet Asian couple sitting at a table piled with paperwork to my right, added, "The restaurant is going to reopen in a few months but as a Thai place. Have a nice day." Taking that as my cue to leave, my sushi craving was replaced with sadness, and I settled for getting a sandwich at the nearby Sub-Way.
I had dined at the restaurant a handful of times and had always enjoyed its good food, service, and atmosphere. Although unable to contact any Yuki Hana employees, I was able to find some background information on Yuki Hana from a Fargo Forum article published in April 2011.
The article, Yuki Hana to reopen in mid-April by Sherri Richards revealed that owner Jin Y. Myung opened the place in 2004 after moving to Fargo from New York City. At one point his head chef was Derek Kinoshita, a previous chef for the MGM Grand and Caesars Palace, who took pride in creating all menu items from scratch.
Though sad to see one of Fargo's sushi restaurants close, I'm looking forward to trying this new Thai restaurant. And I will try to be more observant of "We're Closed" signs that are hanging outside of restaurant doors...
